About the Project

“Vyshyvanka for the President” is a cultural diplomacy project created by Ukrainian designer Halyna (Halynka) Shunevych, whose work has become internationally recognized for its mastery of white‑on‑white Richelieu embroidery and its deep connection to Ukrainian heritage.

Through this project, Halyna gifted embroidered Ukrainian shirts—vyshyvankas—to world leaders as a gesture of gratitude, respect, and cultural exchange.

Her mission is simple yet profound: to express Ukraine’s appreciation to the presidents and leaders who have supported the Ukrainian people, while sharing the beauty and symbolism of Ukrainian embroidery with the world.

Its activities contribute to the promotion of Ukraine in the world, promote a positive image of Ukraine abroad, and generate positive publicity about Ukraine.

Why This Project Matters

In moments of crisis, the support of global leaders carries enormous weight. Their decisions influence humanitarian aid, security assistance, cultural preservation, and international solidarity. For Ukraine, such support has helped protect lives, safeguard cultural identity, and strengthen the nation’s resilience.

Halyna’s project is not political—it is cultural gratitude expressed through art.

1. Embroidery as a Language of Appreciation.

Ukrainian embroidery has always been a way to communicate respect, blessing, and honor.

1. Embroidery as a Language of Appreciation.

Ukrainian embroidery has always been a way to communicate respect, blessing, and honor. Presenting a vyshyvanka to a president is a symbolic way of saying:

  • “Thank you for standing with us.”
  • “Thank you for recognizing our culture.”
  • “Thank you for helping protect our people.”

    2. A Cultural Gift Carries Emotional Weight.

Unlike formal diplomatic gifts, an embroidered shirt is personal. It is handmade, meaningful, and rooted in centuries of tradition. It reflects the heart of the Ukrainian people.

    3. It Strengthens Cultural Diplomacy.

When a president wears a Ukrainian embroidered shirt, it sends a powerful message to the world:

    • Ukrainian culture matters.
    • Ukrainian identity deserves protection.
    • Art can unite nations.

This is why Halyna’s project is so important—it transforms gratitude into a lasting cultural symbol.
